Day 1 - Monday, December 10th

Busy Catholic's 2018 Online Advent Retreat
First Day • Monday, December 10

Scripture (Luke 5.17-25)
One day as Jesus was teaching, some men brought on a stretcher a man who was paralyzed....When Jesus saw their faith, he said, "...Your sins are forgiven." Then the scribes and Pharisees began to ask themselves, "...Who but God alone can forgive sins?" Jesus said to them, "Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or 'Rise and walk'? So that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins" - he said to the man who was paralyzed, "Rise, pick up your stretcher, and go home." The man stood up immediately before them, picked up what he had been lying on, and went home, glorifying God.

The Pope's Reflection
The Lord comes, he comes into our life as a liberator; he comes to free us from all forms of interior and exterior slavery. (Angelus, December 11, 2016)

Our Reflection
Choose a question to ponder this day:
--Have you experienced the liberating presence of Emmanuel, God-With-Us, in your own life or in the lives of a friend or loved one?
--Which is more important to you: that God heal a physical infirmity or forgive our sinfulness?
--What new freedom will we celebrate at Christmas?

Prayer
Dear Lord, you humbled yourself and came to our world, sharing in our humanity in order to save us. You walked among the people, forgiving their sins and healing their bodies. I am a wounded creature. My heart is heavy with my own sins; my body aches with its own ailments. Thank you for the great gifts of the sacrament of reconciliation and the anointing of the sick. Help me to have sorrow for my sins and to seek your forgiveness. Please heal both my soul and my body in all the ways that I need healing. Amen.
